Mikel Smit has nearly a decade of experience in researching and analyzing national security and homeland security affairs. Most recently, he worked at the CI Centre, where he analyzed trends in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and counterintelligence in support of an open source database.

He has published two papers on lessons learned in post-conflict stabilization; and Russian covert operations in Eastern Europe.

He graduated cum laude at Luther College with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. Later, he received a Master of Public Policy from American University.
