For someone who loves dogs and supporting our military, there is no better volunteer opportunity than becoming a Puppy Parent.  My husband and I became Puppy Parents two years ago to an 8-week-old labrador retriever named Cody, through a non-profit organization called Warrior Canine Connection.  Cody was named after a 21-year-old soldier who was killed in 2004 when the Bradley fighting vehicle he was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device in Taji, Iraq.  We raised, trained and socialized Cody for two years to become a service dog for a Wounded Warrior.  Much of the training he received was from wounded warriors who were undergoing medical treatment at Ft. Belvoir, their training and socializing of “Service Dogs In Training” assisted with their recovery in many ways.  Cody is now a service dog to a true hero, a Marine who fought in Afghanistan.  Raising Cody was a truly rewarding experience, and just a small way we could give back to the soldiers who fought to keep our country safe.
